SEO & SEM: Whats the difference?

The term SEO has been around for many years now, but what about SEM? Many people are asking about what it is and how they are different.


What is SEM?

The acronym is short for Search Engine Marketing.


How are SEO and SEM different?

SEO (Search angine optimization) is the art of optimizing your website content to help it get found on the internet. This usually includes adding or adjusting the actual content on your pages, as well as adding the optimal keywords and descriptions to your pages.


SEM (search engine marketing) refers to all of the things you do to market your website and bring in traffic. There are many more parts to SEM than SEO - actually SEO should be considered just one of the many components of SEM.


What is included in SEM?

There are unlimited components to SEM, but here is a list of the more common ones to get you started.

  • Social networking (facebook , twitter, other similar sites)
  • Search engine submission
  • Local directory inclusion
  • Blogging
  • Pay per click advertising
  • SEO
  • Physical mailings (like postcard advertising)
  • Link swapping
  • Forum participation

While each of these topics alone could be worthy of a small book, that is beyond the scope of this article. There is a lot of information to be found on the internet if you search for any of these methods.

Converting Visitors to Customers

It's one thing to get people to your website, but another thing entirely to get them engaged with what you have on your site.  What I mean by this is that you want to convert visitors to your website into customers or clients.  So to do that you need to get their interest... and quickly. So you need to have compelling content... or at the very least a strong headline to get them to read on.

Also consider that most people who visit your website will want to find what they are looking for as fast as possible, so it is a good idea to make things as easy as possible to find. Make your navigation links clear as to what they lead to and when they get there make sure the content they are looking for is readily available.

There is quite a bit to know about creating compelling content for your site and far too large a topic to cover in a simple blog post.  Essentially what we are saying here is that it is very important that you consider the visitor and what he/she wants... that is a good starting point to creating content to convert visitors to customers.

Getting your website to work for you

All too often, I see people think that they are going to build a quick website and be in business. They spend time and/or money getting a website together and then sit back and wait for the business to start pouring in. After 6-12 months, they get discouraged at the lack of results and decide to throw in the towel.


The problem is that many people are mistakenly under the impression that just by having a website, people will find it. If there were only a few websites out there, that might be true, but in 2011 there were at least 340 million websites showing up in internet search engines and more are being added every day. Most people will never visit even 1% of the sites available on the interent.


That doesn't sound very encouraging...but there are things that you can (and should) do to make your website work for you. You wouldn't open up a store and expect it to start making money without any advertising, right? It's the same for the online world.


So what should you do? Here are a few of the most basic things to start with:


First, make sure your website allows you to use SEO (Search Engine Optimization) keywords. These are words that will help people find your website. Example - If you want people to find your website when they type the word "bicycle", then you should add "bicycle" to your list of keywords. I recommend adding up to 100 keywords. It is good practice to use these keywords in your website content as well, whenever possible. Just be warned that unnecessary repeating and overuse of the words or keywords can cause the search engines to ignore them altogether.


Next, get your site listed as many places as possible. Submit your website to Google, Yahoo & Bing at the bare minimum. There are hundreds or maybe thousands of other online directories as well. The more you are listed in, the better chance you have to increase your traffic. When the search engines see that your site is listed with 500 other established websites, it will rank your site higher than a site that is brand new and not listed anywhere.


After you have your keywords in place and have submitted your site to the major search engines, you should strongly consider adding a blog to your website. By adding a blog with useful content, you increase the chances that people will stumble upon your website when they are looking for information. Your website content is the most important factor in how the search engines rank your website.


Not to be overlooked, social media like Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn and others are extremely important in helping to gain traffic and spreading the word about your business. There are endless ways to use social marketing to your advantage and if you aren't using this method, you will be behind your competition.


Advertising and finding ways to increase traffic can be a full time job and should take up at least a couple of hours a week if done properly. Fortunately, if your business is short handed and you don't have time for this extra effort, there are lots of companies out there (like Pilot Web Solutions) that will help manage your SEO efforts for a small fee.
